About the Chorus

The Wellesley Choral Society has been a thriving organization since it was founded in 1947. As a community chorus, our mission is two-fold: to provide opportunities for residents of Wellesley and the many surrounding towns to study and learn the world’s great choral music, both sacred and secular; and to perform those works publicly and at reasonable prices for Metro West concert goers. We typically give three main concerts each year: two Sunday afternoon concerts, one in fall and one in the spring, that feature serious choral music and that can include professional soloists and orchestral accompaniment, and a more light-hearted winter cabaret concert, where concert goers sit at long tables, with complimentary food, wine, and silent auction.

We are fortunate to have been led for the past 25+ years by two consummate music professionals: Edward (Ted) Whalen (an accomplished music educator, choral director, singer, and composer) who has been the chorus’s tenth Music Director since 1994, and Hisako Hiratsuka (an accomplished pianist and teacher at Tufts) who has been our accompanist since 1993. Ted’s goal for the chorus is to create the best possible sound from the group while having lots of fun. He also challenges us to perform a wide range of music in many different languages and styles, including some beautiful pieces that are sometimes overlooked and not as widely performed.
