One of Handel’s most popular oratorios, Judas Maccabeus tells the story of the second century BCE Maccabean Revolt, in which the heroic Jewish leader of the title led his people to victory over Syrian oppression. The work ends triumphantly with the Jewish people re-taking the Temple in Jerusalem and celebrating Hanukkah, “The Feast of Lights.” Featuring some of Handel’s most rousing choruses and loveliest arias, the music dramatizes a great emotional journey from abject misery – “Mourn, ye afflicted children”…
