O Radiant Dawn: Choral reflections from scripture, poets, and an astronaut

Sun, December 15 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm EST

$15 – $25

The year’s end brings us together to rejoice in our common humanity and in the light that miraculously emerges from darkness. Many differing sources — Psalms, Christian liturgy, seventeenth-century chorale verses, contemporary poetry, and centuries-old English carols — all express this. Oriana celebrates its twenty-fifth season by presenting choral reflections of them: J. S. Bach’s brilliant Singet dem Herrn; Johannes Brahms’ impassioned O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (Saviour, open the heavens); Giuseppe Verdi’s Ave Maria; choral psalm settings by Claudio Monteverdi and Gregor Aichinger; James MacMillian’s setting of the antiphon O Radiant Dawn; old and new carol texts in new settings by Libby Larsen, Ola Gjeilo, Philip Stopford, and Cecilia McDowall; and Kirche Mechem’s setting of the poem Island in Space by Russell Schweikart, the Apollo 9 astronaut who, while in Earth orbit, looked down at our planet and noted that it showed no visible political borders, that it contained everything that meant anything to us, and that it was utterly silent and looked totally fragile.
