MIT Women’s Chorale, spring concert, open dress rehearsal

Sun, April 30, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm UTC-4

Free
In preparation for its concert on May 6*, the Chorale will perform in the Great Engines Hall of the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum, which has been described as a “cathedral of steam technology.”  In addition to the wonderfully preserved pumping engines, the Museum features the history of Boston’s clean drinking water.  The Museum is a remarkable example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.

Under the direction of Kevin Galiè, the  Chorale will perform as its featured work Hasse’s Laudate pueri.  A lively setting of Psalm 113, this 18th century piece was written for the young women of one of the Venetian charitable institutions (Ospedali).  With pianist Seoyon MacDonald, the Chorale will range in song “from tears of sorrow to the waters of spring”: from the sorrow of the Virgin in a lovely setting of the hymn Stabat Mater, to rain at night in Latin America, to French ocean breezes, and to the oddly rhythmic rocking of a boat with its oars at rest.

*On Saturday, May 6 at 5 PM, the Chorale will perform this repertoire in its main concert at Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church, 1555 Massachusetts Avenue, Harvard Square. On this occasion, the work by Hasse will feature an accompaniment of string quartet and organ.

Both events are free.
Directions and parking suggestions will be posted on our website.
