How do you get to the heart of a song? What can a melody tell you about the meaning of a song? Join Greater Boston Choral Consortium as we welcome venerated composer, conductor, and teacher, Alice Parker, for a day of inspiration and music-making.

On Saturday, September 28, at Boston Conservatory, Alice will lead two sessions designed for participants of all levels. From 9am-12pm, she’ll facilitate a workshop for song-leaders and conductors (application required; capped at 25 participants), and from 3-5 pm, she’ll lead an open sing (no application; no participation cap; ability to read music is encouraged).

In the song-leading workshop, participants will receive individual attention as Alice guides the group in focusing on melody, communicating, and developing the ability to move people. There are no age or education level prerequisites, only that participants be in positions of musical leadership in their respective organizations. Being comfortable sharing and singing in front of a group is encouraged.

For the open sing, Alice will cover 15-20 carefully curated songs to explore the relationship between melody, improvisation, and meaning. Singers of all ages and abilities are welcome; the ability to read music will ensure a more meaningful experience, though it isn’t required.

We anticipate great interest in this exciting event, so make plans now to join us on September 28.

The open sing session is FREE to students with valid student ID thanks to a generous Alfred Nash Patterson Grant from Choral Arts New England.

GBCC is additionally supported by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council and administered by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

Logistics: Please note that parking in the Fenway neighborhood can be challenging, particularly in the fall. We strongly encourage participants to carpool or take public transit. The nearest T stop is Hynes Convention Center (Green B, C, and D lines). The CT1, 1, and 57 bus lines also service this stop.
