Commonwealth Chorale presents Thompson’s Frostiana and Menotti’s The Unicorn,The Gorgon, and The Manticore
Sat, May 11 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm UTC-4
Gian Carlo Menotti’s charming madrigal opera, The Unicorn, The Gorgon and the Manticore is one of the composer’s most accomplished works. In it, he introduces us to three mystical beasts that represent three phases of life: young, middle, and old age. Under the guise of a fairy tale, he delivers a caustic critique of affection and materialism. With a small orchestra and an engaging range of musical textures, this piece is sure to delight.
Randall Thompson’s Frostiana, commissioned for the 200th anniversary of the town of Amherst, MA has become a classic since its debut in 1958. Frost’s seemingly simple poetry is matched by seven beautifully-crafted movements capturing both the essence and impact of the poet’s verse.
