The Commonwealth Chorale presents Brahms, Bernstein, Elder, Paulus, Pahn and Tarver.
Sat, May 12 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm$35
This Commonwealth Chorale concert will be at The Second Church of Newton as part of the Newton Festival of the Arts. Come experience songs rooted in traditions ranging widely across time and place. Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder, (Gypsy songs) reflect the composer’s deep affection for spirited Roma music using texts based on Hungarian folk songs. To celebrate Bernstein’s 100th anniversary of his birth is Make Your Garden Grow from Candide. Daniel Elder’s inspirations for Three Nocturnes include the 14th century ballades of Guillaume de Machaut and the Shakespearean sonnet. American roots underlie the remaining program: Stephen Paulus based The Road Home on a folk tune from The Southern Harmony songbook while American poets inspired NEC trained composers Bosba Pahn’s Remember Me (e. e. cummings) and Charles Tarver’s Fill the Night with Music (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow).
