Position Description: Coro-Dante, the all-Italian language repertoire chorus of the Dante Alighieri Society in Cambridge, seeks a Music Director


  • Promote and further Coro’s mission: to celebrate and promote Italian culture through music
  • Prepare and conduct two concerts per year (one in December and one in May), as well
    as lead approximately 12 Monday-night rehearsals for each season
  • Achieve musical artistry through good working knowledge of vocal technique, music theory, harmonic balance, dynamics, rhythm and interpretation
  • Cultivate a welcoming and engaging rehearsal environment to attract and retain new members
  • Advocate for Coro’s activities across networks and platforms on and offline
  • Help recruit and audition new members each season
  •  Select appropriate music from the Italian-language repertoire or Coro’s extensive
    music library to develop concert programs that are suitable to the group as well as the
  •  Help design and prepare each concert program including, theme development, hiring of instrumentalists and vocal soloists and use of visual elements
  • Attend two executive committee meetings per year and collaborate with committee
    members during the year as needed


  • Music degree and/or previous choral conducting experience
  • Alignment with the mission and good knowledge of Italian choral repertoire
  • Competence in instructing vocal technique and choral conducting
  • Ability to play voice parts when no accompanist at rehearsal (for learning purposes)
  • Some knowledge of Italian helpful

An active presence in the Boston Italian-speaking musical, artistic, academic, and young
professional communities would be also helpful for purposes of promoting Coro’s activities,
recruiting new members and fostering fruitful collaborations.

An enthusiastic and engaging personality, who is able to relate with people of all ages and
musical backgrounds.

An appropriate stipend is negotiable.

About Coro-Dante

The Coro-Dante, New England’s all-Italian repertoire chorus of the Dante Alighieri Society,
aims to celebrate and promote Italian culture through music. It is a four-part (Soprano/Alto/
Tenor/Bass) chorus of about 55 persons of all ages who share a special appreciation for the
Italian music, language and culture. Now in its thirteenth year, the Coro mines the vast Italian
repertoire to present a unique program of both well-loved and rarely-performed works
ranging from madrigals, oratorios, operas, art songs, and regional folk songs. The Coro has
introduced the North American public to at least seven premieres of pieces by composers such
as Cadore, Cartellieri, and Porpora, and it has amassed a considerable library of arrangements
from works by Verdi and Rossini to Ponchielli and Respighi.
