Boston Secession, Jane Ring Frank, Artistic Director |
| The Big Oh!: A let-‘er-rip romp through the sexier strains of music from 999 to today. This is a seductively silly, positively PG-13 program that explores the earthier mechanics of 'friction to heat' conjugal counterpoint, tests the tortured romanticism of Wagnerian love-death, and takes a humorous look at love “from both sides, now.” Repertoire highlights run the gamut—from Pergolesi to Verdi, Barber, Schoenberg, Bruckner and more. Heineman Ecumenical and Cultural Center, Framingham State College. 24-voice professional chorus, string quartet, piano. Ticket information: Preferred Seating, $40, $35 in advance; General Admission, $25; Seniors, $15; Students, $10. Please visit www.bostonsecession.org or call 617-499-4860 for further information. |
Fri, Nov 9, 8:00 pm
Cantata Singers & Ensemble, David Hoose, Music Director |
| Kurt Weill: Legend of the Dead Soldiers First Boston performance Luigi Dallapiccola: Canti di Prigionia Carl Orff: Carmina Burana; Janet Brown, soprano; Rockland Osgood, tenor; David Kravitz, baritone.
Weill's eloquent post Great War ballad, Legend of the Dead Soldiers, and Dallapiccola's passionate 1939 anti-Fascist political protest unleash the social force of music. Together, they push against Orff's provocative playing with the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, and the pleasures (and perils) of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust. Hypnotic. Primal. Seductive. New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St., Boston 617-868-5885; www.cantatasingers.org. Tickets $15-$54 |
Fri, Nov 9, 8:00 pm
Chorus pro Musica, Jeffrey Rink, Artistic Director |
| ROGER AMES: Requiem for Our Time; GABRIEL FAURE: Requiem.
Premiered in 1985 as Requiem for Unbelievers, Ames's Requiem combines the Latin text of the Mass for the Dead with the modern poetry of Anne Sexton. This will be its first New England performance. Roger Ames is a noted composer of operas and vocal works including Amistad and In Memoriam: Warsaw 1943.
Faure's Requiem, premiered in 1893, is a profound testament of faith with an ethereal beauty that has made it one of the most-beloved Requiem settings of our time.
With soloists David Murray, baritone, and Ilana Davidson, soprano. OLD SOUTH CHURCH, 645 Boylston Street, BOSTON. MBTA: Green Line to Copley, or Orange Line to Back Bay. Tickets $25-$45.
