Orlandissimo: A Renaissance Prodigy. For his feats of composition and the beauty of his voice, Orlandus Lassus (1532-94) gained unparalleled fame at an early age. Convivium begins its year-long survey of Lassus’ polyphony with a winter program featuring work from his early career in Italy and the Low Countries, revealing a young composer steeped in the musical traditions of his homeland and with a penchant for adventurous harmonies. Mid-winter concert: A Folk Song Feast. This pops/cabaret-style concert will feature songs from around the world (USA, Mexico, Israel, South Africa, Germany, Hungary, the British Isles and others) arranged by Copland, Brahms, Bartok, Vaughan Willams and Britten. This is a casual event. The audience will be seated at tables and complimentary refreshments will be served. A raffle and sing-along add to the evening's entertainment. Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street (near the intersection of routes 9 and 16). Directions to the church can be found on the WCS website, www.wellesleychoralsociety.org. The church is handicapped accessible and there is ample free parking. Tickets will be sold at the door: $15 regular admission, $12 seniors, $5 students.

Peter Elvins Vocal Competition presented by Powers Music School
Enjoy glorious singing as vocalists ages 15 - 39 compete for cash prizes in the Finals Concert of Powers Music School's 7th Annual Peter Elvins Vocal Competition. Also meet this year's adjudicators: Richard Dyer, former Music Critic for The Boston Globe; Sondra Kelly, world-renowned Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano; and Lloyd Schwartz, classical Music Editor for The Boston Phoenix, commentator on music and the arts on NPR's program Fresh Air, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for criticism.
