The A Cappella Singers under the direction of Sharon Brown from Berklee College of Music present their 47th Season with our Holiday program entitled "Alleluia, Alleluia." The Oriana Consort, a 29-voice chorale, presents “New Songs for Midwinter”: choral music for Advent and Nativity from the 16th, 17th, 18th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The program includes Henry Purcell’s anthem “O Sing unto the Lord a new song”, Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria in excelsis Deo”, motets of Hans Leo Hassler, Claude Debussy’s “Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain”, Eric Whitacre’s “Lux aurumque”, Kenneth Leighton’s “A Hymn of the Nativity”, and Abbie Betinis’ “Cedit, Hyems”, accompanied by Vanessa Holroyd, flute. Soloists from the chorale are featured, and the Purcell and Vivaldi are accompanied by a period instrumental ensemble of Mai-Lan and Hendrik Broekman and their friends. The Starlit Birth - James Woodman: A Midwife's Tale - 1996 commission of The Boston Cecilia and more! The Starlit Birth, Cecilia's annual salute to the Christmas season in two performances, features a revival of James Woodman's A Midwife's Tale, commissioned and first performed by Boston Cecilia in 1996. A Midwife's Tale sets excerpts from the Arundel Manuscript, a collection of legends about the life of Christ which dates from the 8th century and earlier, in which Zachel, a midwife enlisted by Joseph to attend to Mary at the time of Christ's birth, tells the story of her birthing experience. Complementing this work will be additional pieces by Woodman: his Magnificat and two recent Carols, as well as Carol settings by American colonial and European composers.
