| Just in time for the holidays, the 31 voices of Lexington’s Halalisa Singers present seasonal music from around the world in “Songs of Light.” As the winter solstice approaches, the vocal group’s winter concert illuminates the ways in which various cultures celebrate light. Artistic Director Mary Neumann conducts the chorus singing in six languages, including the Hebrew “Aleih Neiri (Rise Up, My Light),” “Benedicta Es (Blessed Be)” in Latin, the Basque “Gabon Izar,” and Eric Whitacre’s setting of Edward Esch’s “Lux Aurumque.” Rousing holiday spirituals on the program include “Behold the Star!,” “Walk in the Light,” and “Yonder Came Day.” Other celebratory selections include the Welsh folk song “Gower Wassail,” the shape note hymn “Star in the East,” the gorgeous traditional Canadian song “The Huron Carol,” and Peter Yarrow’s “Light One Candle.” A highlight of the program will be the premiere of renowned songleader Nick Page’s piece “Heaven Found.” Pianist Valerie Ross and percussionist Bertram Lehmann will accompany the singers. | Celebrate the season with the Master Singers of Lexington performing Conrad Susa's popular "Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest" and the New England premiere of "Shepherds and Angels" by Lexington composer Pamela Marshall. Conrad Susa's work is a Nativity celebration of the Americas, performed with guitar, harp, and percussion, and includes a medley of traditional Spanish carols from Spain, Mexico and Puerto Rico sung in Spanish, Catala¡n, and (sometimes) English. Pamela Marshall has drawn on Early New England and Appalachian material for her arrangements of seldom heard Christmas songs. "Shepherds and Angels" includes a prelude and 9 songs which Ms. Marshall describes as "both earthy, energetic revivalist singing and the most tender and gentle lullabies", and she has added a violin to the chorus and harp instrumentation. The concert will be presented without intermission on Sunday afternoon, December 14, at 4:00 p.m. and concludes with a selection of familiar carols, a Master Singers tradition. A reception with seasonal refreshments follows the concert. First Parish Church in Lexington is on the Battle Green at 7 Harrington Road and is fully accessible with ample free parking.
