The Oriana Consort, Walter Chapin, Director
The Oriana Consort, a 29-voice chorale, presents “From France: Choral Celebrations ... in chants, motets, choral songs, and Requiems”. The program includes Gabriel Fauré’s immortal “Requiem”; selections from “Missa pro defunctis” of Antoine Brumel, circa 1500; “Quatre motets sur des thèmes grégoriens” of Maurice Duruflé; the “Trois Chansons” of both Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel; and selections from Francis Poulenc’s “Motets pour un temps de pénitence” and “Prières de Saint François d’Assise”. Soloists from the chorale are featured, and the organ accompaniment to the Fauré will be played by the award-winning organist Balint Karosi. When Britten Met Haydn - Haydn: Missa brevis St. Joannis de Deo. Haydn: Salve Regina in g minor; Britten: Cantata Misericordium; Britten: Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings. When Britten Met Haydn, Cecilia’s final concert of the season, presents a comparison in style and substance of works by both composers. Haydn’s St. John of God Mass—also known as the Little Organ Mass because of its obbligato organ part—and his rarely performed Salve Regina in g minor, a three-movement work for soloists, chorus and chamber orchestra, will be matched with Benjamin Britten’s Cantata Misericordium and the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, featuring young Boston tenor Aaron Sheehan.
