“And Sing For Joy”—songs of adoration and anticipation: Samuel Barber’s “Reincarnations” (poems on love and death by the Gaelic poet Anthony Raftery, translated by James Stephens); Claude Debussy’s “Trois Chansons” (three fifteenth-century ballads by Charles d’Orléans); Virgil Thomson’s “My Shepherd will supply my need” and Charles Ives’ “Sixty-Seventh Psalm” (two contrasting settings by American masters); Samuel Scheidt’s chorale concertato “Komm, heiliger Geist” (in which the composer combines the chorale of that name with the Gregorian “Magnificat”); “Komm, heil'ger Geist” by the little-known Georg Schumann (a rich and dramatic setting of the same chorale, in late German Romantic style); and three Advent motets by William Byrd. The Scheidt work is accompanied by recorders, krummhorn, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, under Martins Aldins’ direction. Church of the Covenant, Berkeley & Newbury Streets, Boston.
