J.S.
Bach: Cantatas BWV Nos. 187 and 76, James Primosch: Matins (World Premiere), Peggy Pearson, oboe.
The Cantata Singers continues its celebration of four decades
with the music from which it grew — Bach sacred cantatas
and new creations. James Primosch, in a work co-commissioned
by the extraordinary oboist Peggy Pearson and the Cantata Singers,
weaves the contemplative words from Pulitzer Prize-winning
poet Mary Oliver’s "Her Grave, Again" and Gerard
Manley Hopkins’s "God’s Grandeur" into
a spiritual outpouring of praise and thanksgiving. Two cantatas, “All
creatures wait upon Thee” and “The Heavens tell
the glory of God,” offer their own gratitude in word
and thought as rich and powerful as they were over 250 years
ago. New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough
St., Boston. Accessible on the Green Line Symphony stop and the
Orange Line Mass. Ave. stop. Hall
is wheelchair accessible and
has assistive listening devices. Tickets: $20, $30, $48. 617-267-6502; www.cantatasingers.org |

J.S.
Bach: Saint Matthew Passion. David Hoose leads the
Cantata Singers in J.S. Bach’s overwhelming
masterpiece, "The Passion According to Saint Matthew." Critically
acclaimed tenor William Hite will once again appear in the
role of the Evangelist, and celebrated Cantata Singers baritone
David Kravitz will appear in the role of Jesus. Janet Brown,
a local favorite now based in Syracuse, returns to sing the
first soprano role. A sweeping tour de force-—the greatest
work of its kind ever composed, a milestone in western civilization—-Bach’s "Saint
Matthew Passion" retells Matthew’s narrative of
the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Christ. Lloyd Schwartz
of the "Boston Phoenix" hailed the Cantata Singers’ 1994
performance of this majestic work as “our city’s
defining version of one of Western culture’s greatest
achievements in music. . . . Richard Dyer of the "Boston
Globe" applauded: “One was conscious not only of
the size, majesty and sublimity of the work, but also of how
intimate and direct it is . . . It is hard to imagine how the
work could have been more beautifully and expressively played
and sung by chorus, soloists and orchestra.” New England
Conservatory's Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St., Boston. Accessible
on the Green Line Symphony stop
and the Orange Line Mass. Ave. stop. Hall
is wheelchair accessible and has assistive listening devices.
